Pleasure Argument Outline


Conclusion: Pleasure, although widely sought, is neither absolute nor explicit, and therefore not the ultimate good.

EP1. All animals seek pleasure (154).
            • Both rational and nonrational animals seek this everywhere.
EP2. All animals avoid pain (154).
IP1. Things that are avoided are not good.
IP2. Pain is the opposite of pleasure.
IP3. Pain is not good.
EP3. All animals seek what is preferred. (154)
EP4. Everything that is pleasurable is preferred. (154)
EP5. Everything that is preferred is good. (154)
EP6. All animals seek good. (154)
EP7. Good becomes more preferred when pleasure is added to another good. (154)
• A good life becomes more preferred when pleasure is combined with prudence. (154-155)
IP4. Not all things that are preferred are things that are pleasurable.
IP5. Not all good comes through pleasure.

            • To be absolute means that nothing needs to be added
IP5. Something that must be combined with another thing is not absolute on its own.
IP6. Pleasure is not an absolute good.
EP9. Some pleasures may be mixed with pain or disgrace. (155)
EP10. Because pain is not good, not all pleasures that are sought are entirely good. (156)
IP7. These pleasures vary in how much they are preferred based on the degree of pain associated with it.
